When Mrs. Greyson heard horseâs hooves in the yard, she sighed with relief. Someone had come for Miss Wakefield. She pulled back her simple flowered curtains and saw two fine gentlemen mounted on expensive Arabians. She praised the Lord that someone responded to Mr. Bransonâs letter for the young lady was no better. And Mrs. Greyson was glad sheâd bathed her charge, brushed her hair, adding herbs to her burnt hand, and dressed her in a freshly washed chemise.
There was a sound knock on the door and when she opened it they both stepped inside making the room look much smaller, their heads almost touching the rafters.
âEarl and Lord Radcliff. Weâre here for Miss Wakefield,â the earl said looking around and noticing everything was clean though of poor quality and the room was sparsely furnished.
âOver there, my lords. Miss Wakefieldâs fever has not broken and she has not eaten in weeks. Iâm afraid sheâs not long for this world,â Mrs. Greyson said quietly. âItâs best if you speak softly to her, she goes in and out of consciousness.â
The two large men moved towards the bed and when the earl saw her, he let out a gasp of air and a groan. Seeing Hannah so frail and thin, her face almost a death mask of white porcelain, she looked little more than a child. âHannah?â He said pulling up a wooden chair and sitting next to her bed. âIâve come to take you out of here. To see a doctor.â
Gregory looked down at the pale and delicate face of an angel, her blonde hair tangled around her face with the heavy weight of it braided to one side of her. It fell over her shoulder and laid past her waist on top of a simple cotton sheet. He could tell by her slight form that she had not eaten in several days, her lips were dry and cracked, her eyes closed.
âMy God, what a gorgeous creature, even so ill she takes your breath away,â Gregory said pulling up another chair next to his brother.
âHannah, can you hear me?â The earl asked louder and his brother touched his arm in warning.
She moved her head and opened her eyes. Their sea-green color as strong as ever and Gregory muttered, âGads! Like the Mediterranean Sea.â
Hannah looked at the double visionâ¦two large men and she wondered if sheâd passed on to another world. She hoped it was true. She had no use for her old world. All it held was misery, tragedy, and sorrow.
âIs mother here?â She whispered. âIâd like to see her.â
âNo, sheâs not here. You have plenty of time to see her later,â the earl said his throat tight.
She moaned and the earl laid his large hand on her forehead. âYou still have a fever. The carriage will be here soon. We will move you.â
âI donât have a place to go,â Hannah murmured shifting her legs and trying to turn away from them.
âYes, you do, Miss Wakefield. You are going to Brookhaven,â Gregory answered when he noticed his brother was having trouble speaking.
